We have an adult cat, and now my family wants a dog. (We want to get one as a puppy, and hopefully rescuing one at a shelter will be possible.) Which breeds of dogs are most compatible with cats?

One that is cat friendly is a personality type, not a breed type although some breeds (like sighthounds) are more prone to be ‘small animal’ driven then others…
Your best bet is to rescue a puppy and make sure that you acclimate it to the cat- since you are getting a puppy just make sure to teach him proper manners towards the cat- don’t let her harass her, etc.

Stay away from hounds-beagles, bassets, greyhounds..and terriers.
I would get a smaller dog, maybe a poodle, maltese, shih tzu..

pretty much any dog can get along with cats, it just depends on how you train them and how old they are when they go into ur house,
