Can You Litter Train A Cat At Any Age?

I’m thinking about bringing a stray male cat into the house. I am not sure if he will use a litter box. I’m sure he (Oreo)is not a kitten anymore.

When you bring Oreo into the house make sure you show him the litter box. Take one of his paws and scratch in the litter with it to show him this is where he is to go. If you see him looking around for a spot to go, try to pick him up and run him to the litter and again take one of his front paws and show him how to scratch the litter. Try to have patience with him because this might be a new thing for him. Praise him when he does right. He should be taken to the vet to get checked for feline leukemia and parasites in his stool also. A healthy cat has a happy owner. Train him now not to get up on your table and counters. Try not to feed him table food. Once you start he’ll always want it and cat food it better for him. If he’s not yet a year old, feed him kitten food. You can go to http://www.kittenwise.com and sign him up for a welcome kit. That site has a lot of kitten information on it too. Good Luck.

No, after age 6 months you must put a tiny diaper on the cat.

Go to the vet, to go check. Strays might carry diseases, so be careful unless they ran away from a owner.

u can but its really hard, its all up to the cat whether it want to be trained or not. thats why its best to start when they’re little.

We live out on a country road and over the years, cats get “dropped off”… sometimes we’ll see a cat near our property for a few weeks before we’re sure it’s homeless. We’ve taken in one kitten and three adult cats (all on separate occasions and all of the adults were in the middle of winter). We now have seven cats (one came to us pregnant).
All of the cats did fine using the litter except one – she knew how to use it and USUALLY did; but she was so scared of everything she sometimes would pee other places too. I would guess that all of our cats had previous owners at one point, but we don’t know that for sure(well, except for one that came to us declawed). So, I can’t say for sure that we actually litter trained them…. but we took in strays who did well with the litter.
The best thing to do is start of in a small space. We always started them in a garage bay that we don’t use to get them comfortable with us. Then, I would get him checked out by a vet. Our vet ALWAYS deworms and checks for fleas. We also have them checked for feline leukemia.
    Good luck!

Not really unfortunately cats pased the impressionable stage of life are very hard to train though it is possible but don’t give up I did it with my stray cat!

I personally think it’s cruel to keep a cat isolated in the house.
    Get a cat flap!

Not really, cats usually will start to do that on their own, but if you may have problems with that I would take the cat to the litter box everytime they go to the bathroom, to show them that is where they need to be. If that doesn’t work then take them to the vet, or a trainer.

YES. You can trian oreo to use a litter box. As soon as you bring him in take him straight to it. If you have other cats make sure there is fresh litter in there, cause some cats wont use a “stranger cats” litter box, also if he does start going somewhere else in the house, and you dont have other cats, just move the litter box to that place, and then once he gets used to the litter and uses it regularly you can move it again, but if you do have other cats I recommend getting a secondary litter box to put where he is going potty, you other cats will eventually use it to. Also make sure you take him to the vet and get a Feline Lukemia test as well as other test and regular shots done before you bring him in, especially if you have other cats.

My cats had lived outside for five years before I was able to move them indoors. None of them had any problems with using the litterbox. As was already said, just make sure you show him where the litterbox is, so he knows where he can go. He should figure it out pretty quickly. Cats are pretty smart creatures, most of the time.
