You can’t train him to be a lap cat. Some cats like to snuggle while others don’t. You can’t change their personalities.

You can’t. They either are lap cats or not. Usually kittens tend to curl up in laps more then adults, but its up to the cat – not to you. Our Oci loves to play with you, but he’s not much of a lap cat for very long.
Ling hates to be petted and picked up but she comes and sits in your lap more then Charlie does.

It depends on the personality but, if you think your cat is friendly and affectionate enough, I would try putting it on your lap and petting it very gently, if he doesn’t feel like curling up, don’t make him.

Cats are their own people. You can’t ‘make’ them do anything. We have a set of sisters that are very different. One is content to sit in your lap all day. While the other one has to make the decision to spend time with you.

Try putting a little dried catnip on your lap,
Once he has decided to investigate of his own accord he may think it’s a good idea to stay.
