- No trackbacks yet.
I have a friendly maine coon cat and children that are 7 and up. I want a medium or large dog, like a shepherd. Does anyone have a dog that is good with children and cats and what breed is it?

Personally I like Greyhounds. There are thousands of ex-racers waiting for adoption, and a surprising number of them are cat safe. Since your children are ages 7 and up, they are old enough to treat a dog well and not abuse it like a toddler would. Thank you for including that in your question, it is an important consideration. Greyhounds in general are clean, quiet by nature, some bark, most don’t, do not need a lot of excercise, and don’t shed a lot like Shepherds do. I have four of them and my guys are good watchdogs too. You can find lots of dogs, mixed and purebreed, needing homes at the local pound, or you can try http://www.petfinders.com to find dogs in your area for adoption. The site will tell you if the dogs are cat safe, good with kids, and how big and what breed they are. Good luck getting your new dog!!

it is on a case by case basis. Ushually retrievers/labs and hearding dogs are a safe bet, when selecting a dog you always will want to do a cat and child interaction for that particular dog. A lot of the time when dogs have not been raised under the same circumstance they do not know how to behave around kids and other pets, and getting an adult dog that is not okay with kids or cats yet requires a lot of training, honestly more training than anyone is ever willing to do. Sometimes you’ll also find a particular breed of dog that is not supposed to be good with kids and cats, but because the dog is used to the situation they are a good choice. you may want to stay away from the aggressive breeds, like german shepherd, pit bull ect. Puppies although very easy to place are a safe bet. I although would recommend going to a humane society or shelter that does euthanize and talk to them about what dogs they have that might be a good fit. Ushually the people that work with these dogs on a daily basis will be able to direct you to the dog that is best fit for you and your family,

I have a black lab, he is great with kids and other animals. He has never casued a problem when kids, cats, or birds are around. He is a very sweet and patient dog as i think most labs are.

I had a beagle until February and he was a great dog with both children and cats.
I have a boxer now and she is great with kids but not so good with cats.

i have a black lab and he is really good with my cats and children. he is still a puppy and a little hyper, but that is fine. the cats dont like him, they attack him, but he thinks they are playing. it is kinda funny to watch, actually.

I have heard and read that a boxer is a very good family dog.

A Golden Retriver is a good choice. We have had ours for ten years with small children and cats. The dog and the cat like each others company and the cat will sit on top of our Golden.

Currently we own a pit bull. We have four children ranging from 3 months to six years. She is wonderful with the kids. We also have a cat. They play well together.

Basset Hounds are great with everyone (a little stubborn but worth it)

I had a shepherd collie mix that used to let its kitten ride on his back. They grew up together and were inseparable.

The dogs temperament will vary from dog to dog, there is no set breed that will be a sure bet. German Shepards can be aggresive at times though. I have had good luck with St. Bernards, they usually are lazy and crave attention. A Bloodhound would also be a good choice if you are looking for a calm dog. A Basset hound would also be worth a look. I have had all three of this breed and they have all been good family dogs. Of course there are the usual options too, labs and retrievers, but they need lots of activity to be happy. You might try looking for an english sheep dog as well. Pretty much the only dogs I have herd to stay away from are Chow-Chows, Pit bulls, Rots, and Dobermans. But these dogs have a bad rap due to the ignorant people who usually own the animals. But to stay on the safe side I would go with a breed with a good reputation. But in my opinion the best option would be to adopt a dog from your local shelter or Petsmart. They test the dog there and can tell you wether they are good with children and cats, that way there is no guessing. Plus you get to help a dog in need. Good luck!

We have a boxer who is awesome w/children, our 4 year old goddaughter stays with us & shes been around him since she was 6 months old. He is super protective of her & the best playmate, she craws all over him & tries to ride him & dresses him up & he just lets her do whatever she wants to him & just follows her around everywhere, he adores her (He is also really good w/other children he has just met) we also have a tabby cat the we got a couple of years ago, since she was a kitten & grew up around him, he doesnt bother her, they like to play together, with other cats hes just met, he scares them a lot b/c hes so big & curious & justs wants to play w/them.

A shepherd is a good choice, also a lab, and I am particularly fond of Boxers. We have one female now, used to have the male but he got a little sensitive so we gave him to a family member without small children. Anyway, my female is very well behaved and loves my daughter, almost three. She isn’t aggressive towards other animals and even sleeps with the outside cats sometimes. Why don’t you try visiting your local animal shelter? Rescue is the way to go!

The best one your gonna get is a lab. They are awesome with anyone & anything. They are lovable , loyal & just fun to be around. I have 4 dogs & 3 cats. 2 of my dogs & 2 of my cats, sleep every night tucked around my lab. It’s like a giant pig pile. He loves it. He’s just a big gentle giant. I have only seen 2 labs ever that have not been super friendly like mine. I also have a 4 yr old daughter & she has a blast playing fetch with him.

I am a believer that any dog can be good around kids, if it is raised and trained around them. If you are looking for a dog with a good temper…Labs are generally really good dogs.
Any dog will work out, you just have to be sure to show it lots of love, attention, and proper descipline.
